Until recently the importance of flint ignition, black powder fouling, undersized bullets, volley fire, linear discipline and ultimate reliance on the bayonet had little relevance to the academic historian. Primarily through the growth of responsible reenactors, who re-create the armies of both sides and follow orders and procedures from the original manuals with authentic arms in the field, have we grasped the magnitude of the challenges and accomplishments of our Colonial military leaders.

This book is intended to provide a pictorial reference for identifying the typical hand weapons used from 1690 to 1783. Relatively few of them are accessible in public institutions but reside mostly in private collections. Thus, it is important that they be made known as part of our history. They reflect the manufacturing capabilities of that era, the enormous variety of patterns and sources used by the struggling rebels, plus the personal hand-to-hand courage and discipline demanded in linear tactics.
