Probably most of us who roam the woods in period attire rely upon writers to do the research and summarize the volumes of primary source documents that they pour over. We just don’t have (or take) the time, so good books and magazine articles are our main resources for creating a persona.
In like manner, we also use the images created by modern artists to fill in our mind’s-eye picture of what a frontiersman, colonist, mountain man or Indian looked like in the 18th or 19th century.
One of the artists whose work has appeared on the covers of MUZZLELOADER, Muzzle Blasts, On the Trail and a number of books and DVDs is Andrew Knez, Jr. Andrew’s artistic focus is on the 18th century frontier, and the vignettes that he paints help bring that era to life.
In Eastern Frontier Art, Knez has assembled many of his best paintings for all to learn from and enjoy. But the book includes more than just paintings; it also includes text on the historical background of each painting. An example can be seen in the May/June 2006 issue of MUZZLELOADER, which features Andrew’s Ranger on the cover.
Eastern Frontier Art features excellent full-color reproductions of at least 28 paintings of frontiersmen, Indians and Colonists. You will enjoy it for the artwork and enjoy it for the history. What an enjoyable way to learn about the history of the 18th century frontier.
Eastern Frontier Art may be purchased from the artist for $28.00 plus $7.00 shipping by writing to Imprints, PO Box 1451, McMurray PA 15317, or call 724-969-3200. You can also visit his website at <www.andrewknezjr.com>.@ 2007 ScurlockPublishing Co., Inc. All rights reserved.
