What else needs to be said about brain-tanning? Many books are available on the subject of making buckskin, but Jim Miller now shows you how to brain-tan hides with the hair on. From buffalo to deer to small fur bearers, Jim takes you through the steps of brain-tanning to achieve soft and useful hides and pelts.
Miller is the director of Willow Winds Traditional Tanning and Primitive Skills Workshops as well as an experienced author and lecturer. Even though I haven't tried his techniques, this book makes me believe that I could brain-tan my next deer hide. Miller begins with the hunt and covers skinning, pre-tanning care of the hide, the tanning process and smoking the hide. I found his writing to be concise and easy to understand. In addition, there are photos and sketches to help explain each step.
Brain-tan Buffalo Robes, Skins and Pelts is available from Willow Winds, 962 F-30, Mikado, MI 48745. Shipping and handling $1.75.
